Choosing the Right Scoreboard

Which Scoreboard Will You Choose?

While evaluating your financial journey is essential, it’s easy to rely on the wrong benchmarks. For example, comparing your portfolio to a market index or a neighbour’s investment wins shared around the braai.

Why Neither One Fits

A stock market index has no personal goals, short-term cash flow needs, tax considerations, or time horizon. Casual conversations about the “wins” rarely account for the risks taken, and  people seldom mention the investments that went wrong.

What a Real Scoreboard measures

What you measure changes how you behave. True progress isn’t about beating an index or a friend; it’s about whether your portfolio did what you asked of it and whether your money is supporting the life you want to live.

Instead of tracking arbitrary numbers, focus on the metrics that matter and what you can control:

  • Goals Funded: Are you on track for the lifestyle you want?

  • Income Lasts: Will your wealth sustain you for as long as you need?

  • Mistakes Avoided: Are you protected from permanent financial missteps?

  • Living Well: Is your money buying a life you deliberately chose and enjoy?

If the answer to any of these is no, there is usually something that can be done: saving more, spending less, adjusting the income you draw, or moving the timing of something planned.

Our priority is to ensure your plan delivers on your personal goals, not just chasing a market headline.
